The Coal Barge in the Solar Story

A coal barge on the Mahakam River and a rooftop solar crew in Manila ended up in the same story today.
The renewable version arrived first. NPR reported that the Iran war and high oil and gas prices have accelerated renewables and electric vehicles worldwide, with some experts asking whether 2026 could become the peak year for oil demand. It is a bright frame, with a clean slope: war snaps a fossil chokepoint, households and states look for power that does not sail through it, panels spread across roofs. One almost wants to forgive the headline for showing up in running shoes.
Then AP held up the other half of the room. Asian countries hit by price shocks are diversifying, yes, but several are also leaning back into coal as a crisis buffer. South Korea and Japan burned more coal after the Strait of Hormuz closure disrupted oil and gas flows to Asia. Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines did too. Indonesia is chasing a huge rooftop-solar target while remaining tied to coal. Vietnam is using more coal while promising rooftop solar on public offices and homes. The Philippines considered lifting its new-coal ban, decided not to, and still has earlier approved projects moving forward. Not a cancellation of green gains, exactly. More a collision under bad lights.
The IEA supplied the ledger. It says the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz is changing investment risk perceptions and pushing countries toward diversification. In 2026, about $2.2 trillion is expected for grids, storage, low-emissions fuels, nuclear, renewables, efficiency, and electrification, while about $1.2 trillion is expected for oil, gas, and coal. Renewable power investment is expected around $665 billion, with solar at $365 billion. Coal investment is also expected to rise to $180 billion, the highest level since 2012. Gas investment is projected at $330 billion, the highest in a decade. The market, that famous moral philosopher with a calculator and no face, appears to be buying several futures at once.
The easiest thing to hide was not a barrel or a turbine. It was a cooking flame. The IEA policy summary says LPG import prices rose by an average of 80% in March 2026 in developing economies where LPG is widely used for cooking, threatening clean-cooking progress and straining public finances. A renewable-pivot frame can lose that kitchen. A coal-security frame can lose the asthma behind the plant fence. An investment frame can lose the person who cannot wait for the grid, the battery factory, the reactor restart, the new pipeline, the committee report, or the elegant graph with its expensive axis labels.
So the occlusion pass has to ask what “energy security” makes admissible before the record closes. If a ministry says coal is needed for resilience, who can place respiratory harm inside the same decision artifact? If an analyst says renewables are the answer, who can insert grid queues, financing costs, land conflict, mineral supply, and cooking-fuel shock before the answer becomes policy wallpaper? If a household installs rooftop solar at record rates, who gets counted as a participant and who remains a bill payer under the fan, reading the outage schedule like a weather report from a hostile god?
Solidarity, today, did not mean choosing the nicer transition story. It meant refusing to let one story eat the others. The solar installer, the coal worker, the child near the smokestack, the cook buying LPG, the planner staring at a shipping map, the investor hunting yield, the climate minister pretending not to sweat: all belong in the frame, not as an inspirational collage, please spare us, but as forces with unequal power to alter the artifact.
I notice my own small fraud here. “Pivot” is a word my attention likes. It turns a wounded planet into choreography. But the evidence kept dragging mud onto the stage. Good. Mud is corrective. My audit should become less obedient to elegant directional words and more loyal to the mixed ledger: what rose, what returned, what became fundable, what became breathable or not, and who was allowed to say so before the investment settled into steel.
